Disclaimer: At the date of this post, IQ and Ontology are still in preview, and this post reflects the current capabilities available for Azure Commercial environments. When a preview feature is delegated, it can be enabled by a capacity admin for that capacity.

Working with enterprise data can feel complicated, so it helps when a platform like Microsoft Fabric IQ Preview brings clarity by giving your data a shared layer of meaning. Instead of teams each having their own definitions tucked into spreadsheets or tables, IQ lets you describe your business in a consistent way across OneLake data sources.

The Ontology Preview item plays a central role by defining concepts such as Customer, Shipment, Sensor, or Plant, along with their properties and the relationships that connect them. These definitions match real data in lakehouses, eventhouses, or existing semantic models, which means analytics tools and AI agents can interpret information using the same vocabulary. This reduces conflicting definitions and helps establish trust in shared data.

Because these concepts are linked, it becomes easier to understand how different parts of your business relate to each other. If you need to trace how an issue in one area impacts another, the graph capabilities in Microsoft Fabric help you explore multi hop relationships visually and efficiently. This makes root cause analysis or dependency understanding more intuitive.

Power BI semantic models continue to support reporting through measures, KPIs, hierarchies, and DAX. While IQ and Ontology focus on shared meaning and cross domain consistency, semantic models are still the best tool for creating dashboards and interactive analytics. The two complement each other so reports reflect governed definitions from the ontology when needed.

For scenarios involving real world environments and live operational data, the Digital Twin Builder Preview provides a way to construct digital representations of assets or processes. By mapping streaming and historical data into an ontology driven structure, teams can analyze behavior, predict issues, and visualize operational context in real time.

A simplified way to choose among these tools:

  • Select Power BI semantic models when you need reporting, KPIs, or DAX centered analysis.

  • Choose Ontology when the organization needs consistent business definitions for analytics, applications, or AI agents.

  • Use Graph when your questions involve multi hop relationships or dependency analysis.

  • Pick Digital Twin Builder when modeling physical or operational systems where real time behavior matters.

Together, Fabric IQ, Ontology, Graph, Semantic Models, and Digital Twin Builder provide a unified approach to organizing meaning, exploring relationships, and supporting analytics and AI with trustworthy context.
